Golden Hour

There’s something special about shooting a game under the lights—but every once in a while, you get a completely different kind of magic.

This past matchup between Fond du Lac Girls Softball and Oshkosh West gave me one of those rare opportunities: a full game played during golden hour. As a sports photographer, that’s the kind of timing you don’t take for granted.

From the first pitch, the field was washed in warm, glowing light. The sun sat low in the sky, casting long shadows across the infield and giving every moment a cinematic feel. It’s a look you just can’t replicate under stadium lights—the kind of natural light that adds depth, emotion, and intensity to every frame.

Golden hour presents its own challenges, of course. The light changes quickly, shifting from bright and directional to soft and fading in a matter of minutes. But that’s part of what made this game so fun to shoot. Every inning brought a slightly different look, forcing me to constantly adjust and stay creative.

Beyond the lighting, the game itself delivered great energy. Both teams came ready to compete, and that intensity showed in every play—whether it was a hard swing at the plate, a close play at a base, or a focused moment in the field. Those are the moments I’m always chasing: the split-second reactions, the emotion, the story behind the game.

What made this shoot stand out wasn’t just the action—it was how the light interacted with it. Dust kicking up off the infield glowing in the sun. Hair lit up from behind as players moved through a play. The contrast between light and shadow adding drama to even the smallest moments.

This is why I love sports photography. Every game is different, and sometimes everything lines up just right—the timing, the light, the atmosphere—and you walk away knowing you captured something unique.
